While the mountains of North Carolina usually see snow multiple times per year, the areas closer to Charlotte and further east don’t see as much. This means that many people aren’t sure what to do when it snows. Many times the ice that falls from freezing rain can be worse than a fluffy snowfall. It can cause power outages and dangerous roads. Here are some things you can do to stay safe during a snow event while living in these areas.
Stay Home
Because snow occurs so infrequently, the number of plows and spreaders North Carolina are few. Crews may come in from out of state to help with the cleanup, but the best thing you can do is stay off the roads. Stock up on food and a generator so you can hunker down for a few days while the roads are cleared as well as possible.
Prepare For Power Outages
Icy rain can weight heavily on tree limbs and power lines, which causes the majority of outages during the winter months. Have flashlights with plenty of batteries available. You can also use candles, if you’re sure to be careful with the flames. Check the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home to ensure they’re working.
Have a Winter Emergency Kit
Pack an emergency kit before you need it so you’re ready to go when weather is on it’s way. Fill it with non-perishable food, bottled water, blankets, batteries, flashlights, first aid kit and medicine. If you have an infant, make sure you have baby essentials packed in there. For pets, include food, water and jackets.
With some preparation ahead of time, you can enjoy the snowfall without being caught unaware. Avoid dangerous situations and stay safe until you can go out again after the weather moves on.
