Gather the Tools
Like any new project, having the right tools is important in quilting. There are reasons why quilters use specific scissors and certain types of fabric and thread. They just work better. It’s okay to start with the basics though, and upgrade and expand as your skills grow. Every quilter needs a rotary cutter and a pair of fabric scissors. In addition, it’s important to have a self-healing cutting mat. You’ll be happier with the end result if you cut your fabric precisely, so invest in an acrylic ruler with measuring grids and a perfect corner ruler as well. Round out your supplies with a seam ripper and high-quality pins.
Select the Project
Look with a project rated “easy” or beginner for your first quilt. A four-patch quilt, strip quilt or rail fence quilt all stick with straight lines which make joining seams easier. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, that’s that the seam ripper is for! It’s best to start out with something small, like a baby quilt. Save the king-sized project until after you’ve gotten a little practice.
Choose the Fabric
Some quilters believe selecting fabric is truly the best part of quilting. Carefully make a list of the different types and amounts of fabric you need and go shopping! Others find the prospect of picking out colors that go together daunting. Some stores will sell you curated fabric sets or even a complete kit with everything you need packaged together. Whichever way you go, choose carefully, because if you make it well, this quilt will last for a very long time.
